Blog: Choose Your Future
Life is full of choices, what shall I wear today? What shall I have for breakfast? What plans shall I make for the weekend? The list is endless.
Having choices in life is great, for example having every single takeaway menu available via an App on your phone is extremely convenient and makes the choice of “What do I want to eat tonight?” so much easier. However, having too much choice can sometimes be overwhelming. For example, how often do you find yourself sat in front of a wall of Netflix recommendations unable to decide what to watch?
When it comes to making decisions, some are more important than others, obviously deciding what to watch on Netflix and making the wrong choice can be frustrating, but in the long term probably isn’t going to have a huge impact on your life; it may make you feel like you’ve wasted your evening though!
So exactly how do you choose where you want your future to take you? It’s a big decision, that requires a lot of thought. Let’s take a look at some contributing factors that can help you make your decision easier…
What Motivates You?
One of the more important decisions people make in life is, what career path do I want to take? Where do I see myself in 5 or 10 years, and how do I get my dream job? Whilst only you can answer those questions, we can help make your choices slightly easier.
“Find out what you like doing best and get someone to pay you for doing it” is a famous quote from journalist, writer and broadcaster Katharine Whitehorn, and she’s right! If you enjoy your job, work won’t feel like work at all! But how does all this relate to me you ask? And how does this help me choose what I want to study and what career path to take? Well, how about starting simple, what do you enjoy doing? Is there a particular subject you enjoy at school? A hobby you would like to pursue? A family business?
There are lots of things you could ask yourself that would help you realise that just from your own personal life experiences your chosen path is probably staring you right in the face.
If you’re still drawing a blank, why not try writing a list of what you’re good at, what you enjoy doing, are you outdoorsy? Interested in film? A budding artist? Or perhaps good with numbers?
Completing a self-assessment can reveal things you didn’t realise before and steer you onto a path you hadn’t previously considered. If you need further help or advice, we have a whole team of people who can help discuss your options with you.
What’s Your Learning Style?
Have you ever heard the phrases “learn by doing” or “practical learner” some people learn by doing something for themselves, as opposed to visual learners who can understand and learn something by reading about it, or seeing pictures. Both naturally lean towards different career paths. For example, practical learners tend to gravitate to practical careers such as mechanics or builders.
Visual learners may be drawn to careers such as counselling or music. This is not an exact science of course and should not be taken as a limitation that only practical learners can be mechanics, you can of course, choose whatever career path you want to follow.
If you’re unsure what type of learning style you have, why not try this online quiz which delves into how you learn best and explains how to get the most out of your unique learning style to benefit you.
