Level 2 Barbering is a qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in;
- the creative art of cutting men’s hair
- the specialist work of cutting facial hair
- how to offer a good consultation service for clients
It is now recommended that practicing barbers register as a State Registered Graduate Barber (SRGB) with The Hair Council in order to enhance their business growth opportunities. This course will allow you to do just that.
Underpinning this qualification you will develop a sound knowledge of health and safety whilst working in the barbering industry.
You will also develop a knowledge and understanding of the practical skills learned throughout this qualification.
The purpose of this qualification is to develop your practical skills to a high level of occupational ability to enable you to perform your own salon services.
Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to advise and consult, and provide a range of cutting and barbering services specifically for men’s hair, which includes shaving and creating facial hair shapes.
In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed.

- Follow health and safety practice in the salon
- Cut facial hair
- Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
- Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
- Dry and finish men’s hair
- Create basic outlines and detailing in hair
During your time studying you will develop your skills in a commercial setting and have access to a ‘real’ barber shop/salon with a realistic working environment. You will have opportunity to go on educational visits, work experience and be part of master classes delivered by industry experts.

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing an advanced apprenticeship or Level 3 qualification in barbering, these include:
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering Studies
- VTCT NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Barbering
Those aged 19 or over may not need to pay fees depending on their circumstances. Find out if you qualify for help with your fees.
You will be expected to purchase a uniform and kit (further details will be provided at interview) and pay for educational visits which form part of the course.
