A Silent Tribute: Honor to the Fallen
On Remembrance Day, learners and staff here at Dearne Valley College came together to pay tribute to those who bravely sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
We set up a special wall where both students and staff had attached poppies and tags with personalised messages of remembrance.
Our talented learners and staff crafted beautiful handmade wreaths that were placed all around the campus, adding to the sense of community and reflection.
The morning started with everyone gathering in the courtyard, where one of our learners, who won first place in a remembrance poetry competition, shared his heartfelt poem with us:
War looks like this empty field full of violence and war, bullets flying in the air with no sense of direction
War smells like a greasy mud pit just waiting for someone to keel over
War sounds like a Bomb siren ringing in the ears of those who hear its blare
War feels like a whirlwind of emotions crumbling in on each other
War tastes like the deep pits of hell waiting to burst open and cause chaos
War reminds me of… the good people we lost to this senseless violence that had unfolded before our very eyes
Lest we forget those poor and tortured souls

This sharing was followed by three wonderful members of the student union who recited the touching poem “In Flanders Fields.” This was followed by a 2-minute silence, a moment for us all to reflect.
After the 2-minute silence, we remained silent as “The Last Post” played softly over the loudspeakers, creating a peaceful and moving atmosphere of remembrance.
Once the silence ended, our student union members took the lovely homemade wreath of poppies to the local war memorial, laying it gently at the foot of the statue as a meaningful way to express our gratitude.
Participating in Remembrance Day on campus was not only a great way to honour the fallen but also an opportunity to learn about the important sacrifices made throughout history.
By coming together, we keep their memories alive in our hearts.
