A Survivors Story: Tim Mulroy Inspires Future Generations

10 December 2024

On Monday the 26th November, Dearne Valley College were honoured to host a very important visitor Tim Mulroy, a Holocaust survivors’ son who shared his family’s harrowing yet inspiring story of survival during one of history’s darkest chapters that left a profound impact on our community.

Tim addressed our Protective Services learners where he spoke not only of the resilience of his parents who endured unimaginable challenges, but he also spoke of his own journey of preserving and sharing their legacy to help keep the information alive.

Tims’ storytelling was deeply emotional and educational, emphasising the importance of compassion, tolerance, and service in today’s world. His words resonated with the students, leaving a profound impact that could be felt in the room. The learners said it was insightful, interesting, very emotional and educational.

Tims’ visit serves as a powerful testament to the enduring power of human resilience and the importance of remembering the past to shape a better future.

By sharing his story, he has inspired a new generation to embrace compassion, tolerance, and the pursuit of a more just and equitable world.

Here are some quotes from our staff and learners about how they found the talk:

‘I thought it was educational and emotional experience. It’s down to people to share their stories, as we don’t want information to be lost. We have to preserve history to prevent history from repeating itself.’

– Georgia, Sports and Protective Services lecturer

‘Hearing the personal account of what Tim and his family went through was a very moving and sad experience. His words brought history to life, reminding us of the importance of remembering the past and learning from it.’

Quote from a learner

‘The learners were visibly moved, and the visit undoubtedly enriched their understanding of history and humanity.’
