Bricklaying Under Pressure
Our construction learners here at Dearne Valley College have recently been taking part in a unique monthly competition, where they are tasked with completing a construction project of their own choosing.
On November 29th, they competed in a brick pressure test where they had to build a block wall with a return, so their skills were put to the test. The twist was that there were no hints or help from tutors!
This approach to learning has proven to be a resounding success, with the learners eagerly anticipating creating a new building challenge every month. By selecting their own project, the learners are not only honing their technical skills but also developing their creativity and problem-solving abilities within their craft.
Learners received praise from both tutors and classmates for their achievements, where they got to recognise their strengths and motivate each other to strive for excellence. This positive learning environment has encouraged active participation and engagement within the classroom.
The learners also benefitted from constructive feedback on their work, which includes a grading system that they got given which allows them to learn from their mistakes and refine their skills for future projects. Â
The competition-style format has added an extra layer of excitement and motivation as it makes the learners more driven and highly motivated to win. Knowing that their hard work will be recognised and rewarded as the winner of each monthly competition also receives a certificate and a shopping voucher!
Beyond the rewards, learners are finding immense value in hands-on practice. As one learner said, “It’s the best way to learn. It gets you used to the proper work environment and gives us a chance to experiment and practice with different techniques.”
By tackling these real-world challenges, they are gaining the practical experience alongside the theory that they need to succeed in the industry.
The winner of Novembers pressure test was Jaydan Clark!
