Stalls at Dearne Valley College during LGBTQ+ History Week

Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Week

7 February 2025

Dearne Valley College recently celebrated LGBTQ+ History Week with an engaging series of events and talks, fostering a sense of community and promoting understanding across the campus.

Students and staff were welcomed to participate in a diverse range of activities and talks, designed to educate, celebrate and empower.

The week kicked off on Monday with a powerful presentation given by representatives of the Rainbow Project. Their informative talk about how they aim to improve the lives of the LGBTQIA+ Community by providing individual and group support schemes for people via telephone, video call, text as well as in-person meetings.

So, their talk provided valuable insights into some experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals, then their stall during dinner offered a space for students to engage in further conversation and access further resources.

In a unique and exciting addition, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service joined the celebration, showcasing their commitment to pride and diversity.

Their interactive stall with firefighter gear which the students could wear, a picture frame where they could have a picture of themselves taken behind it, and then later in the afternoon there was an impressive fire engine display in the car park which drew a crowd, sparking conversations about inclusivity with emergency services and showing off the equipment they use whilst in service.

Wednesday focused on gender diversity, with Blue Taylor leading an insightful talk in the morning and then hosting a stall over dinner. The session offered students the opportunity to learn more about gender identify and self-expression, fostering a more inclusive and understanding environment.

Blue Taylor is dedicated to advocate for diversity and inclusion as a transgender individual with a disability, he believes that our differences make us stronger.

The week culminated in a creative and celebratory activity on Thursday and Friday where students participated in a range of LGBTQ+ themed activities and had the chance to design their own personalised tote bags, creating lasting mementos of the week’s events.
