Learner Pedal Power Provides Funds for Children in Need

Dearne Valley College learners and staff have been pedalling toward fundraising for Children in Need in an exciting charitable pedal power challenge.

The charity cycle challenge took place in Dearne Valley College’s main reception area with participants pedalling as fast as they could on state-of-the-art stationary cycle equipment.

As part of a cross-college fundraising effort including Dearne Valley College, Rotherham College and North Notts College, £128.13 was raised in support of Children In Need.

Aside from fundraising, there was also the incentive of a friendly rivalry pushing learner and staff to pedal as fast as they could; North Notts College were also raising funds for Children in Need with the same sporty trial.

RNN Group Learner Event Coordinator Carmen Vine arranged the inter-college fundraising events.

Carmen said: “We talked about the importance of raising awareness for Children in Need in Colleges and how it’s important that learners know about this. I don’t think a lot of learners understand the concept of what Children In Need promote; they see it sometimes more as just an opportunity to come to school dressed up, so we’re trying to change that.

“We’re hoping to raise funds and do this sort of challenge every year moving forward.”

Level 3 Sports learner Joel Hancock was one of the learners pushing themselves to the limit for the charitable cause.

Joel said: “I’ve been cycling for Children in Need and have so far done over 2.4 kilometres! I feel really good about being part of this and am happy to help support the cause.

“I hope the funds raised today helps someone who needs it.”

The final results for distance covered are:

North Notts: 39403 metres

Dearne Valley: 33765 metres
