DVC Welcomes LP Le Corbusier for Exciting Exchange Scheme

18 April 2023

Last month, Dearne Valley College (DVC) welcomed 10 students from LP Le Corbusier for a college exchange through the Erasmus and BE Together schemes. They came to experience and learn with our highly trained lecturers in masonry, bricklaying, and joinery.

LP Le Corbusier is a French professional college in the region of Franche-Comté. By utilising the Erasmus scheme, they have been able to go abroad for different work experiences. Erasmus is an educational programme designed to help students have the opportunity to experience a global education. DVC have used the Erasmus scheme for many years to help our learners experience education abroad.

In the first week of the exchange, the students were welcomed into the departments with flags constructed from different materials that our DVC learners created for them. The exchange students then started their lessons with our tutors to gain knowledge and experience a different way of learning.

Ange, a student at LP Le Corbusier, said that: ‘It’s a lot bigger space to practice in than we are used to. There are many differences to learn.’

Throughout the first week, the exchange students also went on a series of trips to explore the local area. These included the National Coal Mining Museum, Manvers lake for water sports activities, and site visits in Sheffield to explore and learn about the new buildings.

Luc, another student from LP Le Corbusier, said: ‘I really enjoyed the mine, it was very touching to see the history.’

Throughout the second week at DVC, our tutors set up an intercollege competition where students from both colleges went head-to-head in their chosen field of study. In joinery, this was to create a five joint frame. In bricklaying, they were tasked with building a complete straight wall. They all succeeded in this, and at the end, they were given prizes and gifts for taking part.

In this second week, the visits they went on included Wentworth Woodhouse and Meadowhall, as well as competing in a football game with our DVC learners and taking part in our Esports department to learn about the latest gaming trends.

This exchange has been a fantastic experience for both our learners and the exchange students to learn about new cultures and education. It has been a very enjoyable experience for both parties.

Lisa, the trip supervisor from LP Le Corbusier, said that: ‘Everyone has been so kind. Anything we have asked for has been accommodated and we feel at home here. The students will only have good memories from this trip.’

Peter Brown and Dan Wilson, construction lecturers, stated that ‘It has been a great experience for our learners and those who visited. The students all worked well together and showed a strong work ethic. Thanks to the supervisors who came from LP Le Corbusier for all their support.’

Thank you to LP Le Corbusier for joining us at DVC and to our tutors in construction who have hosted this.
