Dearne Valley College supports national ‘Love Our Colleges’ campaign

10 October 2018

Dearne Valley College is proud to support the national ‘Love Our Colleges’ campaign running as part of Colleges Week from Monday 15 October to Friday 19 October.

The campaign emphasises the importance of Colleges in driving communities’ talents and ambitions whilst highlighting the need for investment in the Further Education sector. During the week, colleges across the country will be showcasing the brilliant stuff they do, as well as a national lobby of Parliament on Wednesday 17 October.

There is widespread concern over Further Education funding since a recent report by the Institute for Fiscals Studies revealed a drop in funding for 6th Form and College students of 21% since 2010/11.

John Connolly, CEO of the RNN Group, backs the campaign for a boost in Further Education funding.

“Further Education colleges play a vital role in our local communities and economies, offering skills training and apprenticeships developed and delivered in partnership with employers. We help local businesses to succeed and grow, by helping local people gain the skills and training they need to secure jobs and build careers. By strengthening funding for Further Education, the Government will be strengthening the future for our students and our communities.”

Further education colleges are an essential part of England’s education system. Playing an important role in local communities and the economy, they help people achieve aspirations by delivering top-class technical education, and lifelong learning to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Dearne Valley College continues to invest in the future. This year, we have installed a set of modern hybrid and electric vehicles in our dedicated Motor Vehicles facilities. At the moment less than 1% of mechanics are trained to carry out the specialist work required to service such vehicles.

Gathering national support, the campaign is led by The Association of Colleges in partnership with the National Union of Students, Association of College and School Leaders, University and Colleges Union, Unison, GMB, TUC and National Educations Union.

David Hughes, Chief Executive of The Association of Colleges, said: “Every single day colleges like Dearne Valley College provide world class education and transform the lives of millions of people. Colleges week is an opportunity to celebrate the brilliant things that go on and a chance to showcase the brilliant staff that make it possible.”

He added: “It’s simple, if we want a world-class education system then we need to properly invest in it.”
