Health and Wellbeing Day

28 January 2025

Dearne Valley College recently hosted a Health and Wellbeing Day on campus.

The event aimed to help learners understand the importance of taking care of their mental and physical health through a variety of engaging activities and talks. Participants had access to resources for relaxation, including colouring, mindfulness exercises, and self-care techniques.

Between 10am and 2pm, the Social Space transformed into a bustling hub of activity, hosting a variety of organisations dedicated to supporting student well-being. Learners had the chance to connect with representatives from numerous services, including HealthWatch, Kooth, Mesmac, NECA Gambling Service, Gamcare, Walksafe, Lync Active, NHS Oral Health, and Rotherham Talking Therapies.

These stalls offered valuable information, advice, and resources covering various aspects of health and well-being, from mental health support and gambling awareness to physical fitness and oral hygiene.

Our learners had the opportunity to attend several informative talks in our large seminar room. Lync Active delivered a presentation emphasizing the importance of nutrition, covering various essential topics for maintaining a healthy diet.

Additionally, Naomi from GamCare spoke about the risks associated with gambling, sharing key statistics and highlighting the potential dangers involved. These sessions provided valuable insights and resources to our students.

Learners seeking a more interactive, hands-on experience had a lot to enjoy, including engaging workshops and fun activities. There were opportunities for friendly competition with table tennis and a giant Connect 4 game, and dress-up accessories added a playful touch to the day.

In the sports hall, Lync Active energised participants with a drop-in session that featured dynamic warm-ups, a variety of exercises, and friendly races. Meanwhile, in the FLEX spaces, learners participated in mindful eating activities, sampling different fruits while completing a related worksheet.

The Health and Wellbeing Day was a very informative day, offering learners valuable resources, information, and opportunities to prioritize their overall wellbeing.

The diverse range of activities and sessions ensured that there was something for everyone, promoting a comprehensive approach to health and wellness within the college community.
