DVC Sports Centre Manager Climbed Career Ladder
Shane Finney has been Sport Centre Manager at DVC Sports’ for just over a year, with a variety of duties including overseeing the overall operation of the sport centre, to ensuring users are able to enjoy their leisure time in a safe and friendly environment.
Beginning his career as a casual Leisure Assistant, Shane worked his way up to Duty Manager level in a varied range of facilities including gyms, pools and leisure centres. During his work experience, he studied qualifications in Management and Leadership, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Leisure Management which has helped him climb the ladder.
Shane says, “After studying my degree, keeping up to date with industry specific qualifications along the way, have also been a big help alongside developing skills on the job.
“What’s great about working in the industry I’m in and in particular at DVC Sports, is the opportunity to enjoy working as part of a close knit team in a friendly environment. Every day holds different challenges and experiences, and it helps when you have customers that have been coming to the centre a long time and you’ve developed a good relationship with.”
Shane advises that by studying hard and gaining as much real life experience as possible, whether that means volunteering or fitting in some part-time work alongside your studies, you can reach your career goals.
He added, “By being able to add work experience and employability skills to your CV during your studies, this is a real opportunity to get a foothold in the industry; both experience and qualifications will hold you in good stead for your future career.”
